There’s no way you haven’t heard about this by now. I would have had it up for you all ASAP, but as you might have heard, we ran into a bit of a hacker issue. But now all is well and I want to take a minute to sound off on this hologram.
Picture perfect, I paint a perfect picture
To begin with, this was amazing. It just was. Regardless of your positive/negative take on it, you can’t deny it’s crazy what technology can do. I had heard about the hologram a bit ago, as news of it hit the blogosphere, but I never expected it to actually be this real.
I have to assume that Coachella 2012 will be remembered as groundbreaking for this performance. Years from now, people won’t even remember that Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent, Wiz Khalifa, and Warren G all graced the stage for one show (side note: the fact that Wiz is in that list still amazes me). The lasting impression will undoubtedly be Tupac, sporting his wheat Timbs, hollering back and forth with Dre and Snoop like we never even lost him. Ironically, it won’t be the hologram that fades to nothing, but everything else.
Now the way I see it, the hologram will be remembered for one of two reasons. The first possibility being that Pac’s performance 2012 will be the start of a new trend: holographic acts. The internet has already gotten a grasp on this, bringing up the possibility of acts ranging from Biggie to Big L. But why stop at hip-hop? When would the world be ready to see Stevie Ray Vaughan play one of his classic riffs one more time? How about Elvis swinging his hips like its still ’58? Kurt Cobain remind us who was responsible for the creation of a genre? The possibilities are endless. Yet whether this will turn into a new fad or a complete bust is near impossible to say right now.
This leads me to my next point: the other possible way Tupac at Coachella will be remembered is if it goes down as a one of a kind event. At $100,000 – $400,000 per hologram made (according to the hologram creator’s interview with MTV), holograms of every deceased artist aren’t going to start pouring out soon. Will these costs prove to be too high to make this a trend in live shows? If so, this performance would truly be remembered as a one of a kind performance.
However, how much does it cost to actually use the hologram after it’s already been created? Aside from the price of the equipment used to actually project the image, there would essentially be no additional costs. Would it be a possibility that one company could buy a hologram for $100k (which we can presumably safely estimate at this mark seeing as technology prices drastically decrease as demand increases, thereby increasing production) and then book it for performances at other shows, therefore actually making money off of it? It’s an idea, an idea that would contribute to holograms showing up at a performance near you.
What do you think? Were you blown away by the Tupac performance like I was? Did you dislike it? What’s your ethical standpoint on dead artists “performing” (and people potentially profiting off of this)? Would you pay extra to see a hologram join your favorite artist live? Would you see a show made up of solely holograms?
There are so many questions this performance has posed, I’ve merely skimmed the surface to save you from my ramblings, but I would love to hear what you think, so as always, hit me on twitter at the link below, leave a comment on this post or hit us up on our Facebook page; don’t be shy.
I mean it looks like we are back in this concert game and Timeflies is back again too. We had such a great time with Timeflies back in November that almost immediately after the show ended we started talking about bringing them back again. Well it’s happened. Timeflies will be at The Granada Theater in Lawrence, KS on April 10th. You may have seen the poster chillin’ like a villain to the right of this post but if not I have all of the details here for you.

With that I leave you with Timeflies latest Timeflies Tuesday video, a cover of Flo Rida’s “Wild Ones”. Boom.
Believe it or not, Minnesota’s outdoor hip-hop festival is just 82 days away, and as we approach May 27th, the good folks at Rhymesayers let us know what we have in store for this year. I’m definitely pumped about this one, and hoping I will be around for it. Notable acts include Lupe, Kendrick Lamar, Big K.R.I.T., Macklemore, Ghostface, Raekwon, Action Bronson, DJ Premier and Danny Brown. And of course the usual Rhymesayers such as Atmosphere, P.O.S and Evidence will be partaking as well. A big stand out this year is that Brother Ali is scheduled only to host and not to perform (but if his act was just going to be similar to last year’s performance, I don’t much mind that). Check out the full list of performers up top or head to the official Soundset website.
We finally (I know it’s kinda late) bring to you the concert re-cap for the Timeflies concert we put on about a month and a half ago at The Granada in Lawrence, KS. The concert was a huge success, especially for it being our first show. Special thanks to Matt Easton and DJ Ray-Ban for performing as well and to Connor Hays for all of the video and photography work.
Be on the look out for more shows from Empty Throne this semester as we already have a few lined up. The Empty Throne Profile with Timeflies will be coming soon. More profiles with other artists are on deck as well. Thanks for all of the support that we have had for the brand and site over the past year!
REMEMBER! Empty Throne Music will be hosting the Timeflies concert at the Granada in Lawrence, Kansas this week. If you are in the area you should swoop by because it is going to be a great time. Matt Easton and DJ Ray-Ban will be opening and doors open at 9PM. Tickets can be purchased at www.thegranada.com or at the Granada box office from Noon to 5PM. Be there!
So it has been up on facebook and the Granada’s site for awhile but I was going to wait for the new site to officially announce the show. Empty Throne Music will be throwing it’s first event on November 18th at the Granada in Lawrence, Kansas!
When I started the site it was always the intention to making it more than just a blog. Empty Throne Productions, LLC is a real company that that accompanies the site. For the first show what better artists than Timeflies and Matt Easton?
Timeflies has been covered extensively on this site, largely due to the help of Connor and Zach, and Matt Easton was our first interview. I say that from a little different perspective as I know you guys have only seen a few interviews on the site so far but we have more in the can waiting to be edited and released as well as a sponsorship deal worked out with Rico Slice‘s upcoming show titled Pushing the Envelope that is really going to be something special. Be on the the look out for that in the coming months.
Anyway, let me get back to the main topic, I know that posts have definitely been lacking but it’s been a transition time for us and, like most of the ventures with ETM, it has taken longer than originally planned. If you’re in the area and would like to attend or are out of the area and want to make the trek (Shouts to Miran, Dan, Connor and Jesse!) you can peep info on the show below. More promo for this event will be popping up as the show comes closer. Stay tuned!

Yup, you heard me. Surprisingly, Atmosphere tickets are still available for this Friday’s Homecoming Concert at the U of M. The concert is going to be held at the TCF Stadium and starts at 6:30 PM. These shows are best when they’re in his hometown of the Twin Cities and when his fans can shout “Hennepin Ave” louder than any other lyric in the song. You can get your tickets at Fifth Element which is right off Hennepin, the address is 2411 Hennepin Ave Minneapolis, MN 55405 – U of M Student tickets are $10 and general admission is $25. The ticket limit is 8 per person, but it’s cool if you can get them all at one time because tickets are assigned a seat. Get em now! Say ssshhhh.
