So XXL just released the cover for their 2012 freshman class. If you’re not familiar, this is kind of notorious in hip-hop for being a big event…. that really doesn’t matter that much. More than anything, it just gets people worked about behind the scenes politics and let’s everyone throw their two cents in about who they think should or should not have graced the issue. Nonetheless, it’s fun, especially when you see some guys you’ve been riding with for a while get some shine.
This year’s class: Machine Gun Kelly, Danny Brown, Kid Ink, Future, Roscoe Dash, Hopsin, Macklemore, Don Trip, Iggy Azalea and French Montana.
I really enjoy the list this year actually, as the XXL crew did a pretty good job of incorporating some of the different facets of hip-hop, making selections ranging from Macklemore to Don Trip. I can see most of these MCs continuing their success and having solid careers in the industry.
However, in my opinion, there’s a few noticeable absentees in the class. First and foremost being A$AP’s head honcho Rocky. However that was supposedly by his own choice, stating a busy schedule as reasoning. Also Casey Veggies, Schoolboy Q and Jon Connor should have found their way on to this list in my humble opinion. Connor’s appearance might be a little premature though, seeing as the usual selections already have a solid fan base (and sometimes aren’t even “freshman” at all) and Connor is still working his way up to that point. But if I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times, Connor is murking about 97.3% of the new guys in the game right now. As far as explanation for Young Veggies and Schoolboy being left off… I have none. But like I previously stated, covering the Freshman issue has not really proven to correlate with career longevity and those guys will be just fine.
I am going to take a quick second to specifically congratulate Hopsin. He’s out there proving you really can do the damn thing solo if you just don’t seem to fit in anywhere else. If you missed my Artist of the Week post for him wayyy back in the day, catch that here.
Lastly, this gives me a good opportunity to throw in an Iggy Azalea pic. Happy Monday fellas.
MGK and Waka Flocka throw together a video for this cut off of MGK’s Rage Pack (download here if you missed it). This is definitely one of my favorite tracks off of the tape. I’ll be the first to admit that I favor lyrical hip-hop but how can you listen to something like this and not get hyped. This video is hilarious too, just wait until Waka meets the MGK’s girl’s family. I’m hoping these guys keep collabing in the future, they make for a pretty hype track.
Oh and P.S. apparently Katt Williams is a Wild Boy too?
As promised, here’s the download for MGK’s new tape Rage Pack. The title is a pretty good indication of what you’re getting with this one: a couple more laid back tracks but mostly music meant to get hyped to. Enjoy. And don’t get too crazy. Or do. It’s Friday, I say go for it.

Hate him or love him, you can’t deny that MGK knows how to party. He let this little video go as a trailor of sorts for his mixtape dropping this Friday, Rage Pack. Pretty good chance that I will be posting that for you all then, so check back.
Bonus: Check out MGK’s cypher from last night along with B.o.B, Tech N9ne, Big K.R.I.T., and Kendrick Lamar (had to have been my second favorite cypher of the night, behind Shady 2.0 obviously).
For me, this is just another example of why MGK is awesome and hilarious. This flash mob went down at South Park Mall in Strongsville, OH and as you can see fans went crazy. MGK put it out on twitter and his fans came running. He was arrested for disturbing the peace and released shortly after. Lace Up really is a movement.
Sidebar: You gotta love that Bad Boy For Life is playing in the video. I think it’s so cool that Puffy signed him.
So it looks like it’s official. Machine Gun Kelly has finally signed a record deal and it is with non-other than the house that Diddy built. Check out the video above for a mini-documentary on his story and come up. Definitely a kid that deserves all of the success he is getting. Best of luck.

I love getting records like this in my inbox. While this song has definitely been remixed a fair amount it is so good that if someone wants to do it right I am still cool with it. MGK definitely did the original justice. Be on the look out for a video for this song was well. Download link below. Lace up or die.

New XV for your listening pleasure. This little diddy features MGK and is definitely a quality track from two of the new dudes. Download link below. Are we there yet? Cook Classics on the beat by the way.
Sidebar: For all you Kansas people out there, XV is from Wichita if that sweetens the deal for you.
